The short answer
Most apartment applications are approved or declined within 1–3 business days. Complete applications with easily verified income can come back the same day; missing documents, hard-to-verify income, or an unresponsive previous landlord can stretch it past a week. The single biggest factor is under your control: submitting a complete application.
What actually happens after you apply
Your application goes to a screening service that pulls four threads at once: credit (payment history and collections — see what score you need), rental history (evictions, broken leases, sometimes a call to your current landlord), income (your documents, measured against the 3x rent rule), and criminal background. The credit and background pulls are usually instant. It's the human steps — verifying a paystub, reaching a previous landlord — that set the pace.
The three outcomes
Approved — you get a move-in cost sheet and a lease to sign. Gather your documents before you apply, not after the office asks. Apply early in the week — an application submitted Friday afternoon loses the weekend.
